Savior of the world: design
Inspiring American TV-serial called design: e2, the Economies of being Environmentally conscious. A serial of PBS containing six episodes, each episode presenting a different topic. All episodes explain problems and possibly solutions on how to live/produce in a more balanced relationship with our environment. Not because one likes to be ‘green’ being green is becoming imperative. The serial imposes design as key in solving global issues whether being pollution, energy resources or housing. If design is truly key is not so much the question I think merely giving these issues their own stakeholder is fundamental.
Having seen the China: from red to green episode I think this serial should be seen by a lot of people. For example how many people are aware that these things are facts of China:
- China has 1,3 billion inhabitants
- China needs 400 million houses in the next 12 years
- Each year 15 to 20 million people are moving from the country side to cities
Here a small teaser (directly starts a video) of all six episodes. All in all quite inspiring and educational, and education might be a key issue in getting messages like these across.
However truly the serial explains the problems of China I think there might be a related issue causing problems to emerge. America and Western-Europe have become such masters in marketing their products and live-styles that even outside these countries this image and values is being perceived. A natural response is than is that countries like China start aim for similar results (bigger car, decent house, personal possessed products). This brings me to Kant’s categorical imperative, with which one should conclude that maybe not only China needs to save energy. But maybe we should start cleaning our garden and start making greener services and products.
