Na het lezen van een aantal inspirerende artikelen over mISV (“micro-independent software vendor”) en mijn behoefte om weer te programmeren ben ik Project Morio gestart. In dit artikel vertel ik enige achtergrond van project morio.
Door mijn ervaring vorig jaar bij de Kunstuitleen Utrecht viel mij op hoe ‘onderbediend’ deze markt is. Er zijn een handjevol aanbieders die pakketten verkopen die hoofdzakelijk voldoen aan de eisen die zij zelf opleggen aan de sector. Dat de cultuursector vaak een niet commerciële vorm van financiering heeft (subsidie, sponsoring, etc.), zou niet hoeven leiden tot middelmatige software. Helaas is voor zover ik dat heb kunnen beoordelen wel het geval.
Wat mij betreft mag FoxPro op de schroot en worden ingeruild door iets als Rails. Morio wordt dan ook een essentiele webapplicatie (klantbeheer, kunstwerkbeheer, financiële administratie.) zoals je dat mag verwachten van software in 2011.
Zodat ook kunstuitlenen zich (weer) kunnen focussen waar zij goed in zijn: kunst aan een breder publiek brengen.

Oh and with some help of a Dutch cultural subsidy: that is the whole Dutch nation including my father, brother, uncles, and perhaps also you if you happen to be Dutch and are reading this.

And perhaps by coincidence last week a high profile Dutch agency (Fabrique) presented their experience with this process. Apart from the fact that this is a good, perhaps slightly delayed, software development trend. The problem/challenge currently lies in educating customers. Perhaps this is also the reason why the following presentation is so good — Fabrique has been explaining Scrum to its customers already for some time now. Anyhow this presentation is an absolute must to form a ‘mental image’ of the scrum agile process.
