This weekend a Italian friend visited me in Amsterdam and – apart from having a good time – we had very interesting discussions. In my experience Italians have an aptitude to ‘cultivating’. It almost seems embedded in their genes: quality of products, quality of food, but also quality of thought.

These discussions brought out the philosopher in me, hence I came up with the following phrases. In Italian one could decide to call them ‘perle di saggezze’ [pearls of wisdom], but obviously I can’t apply this label myself.

Email sono i mattoni della società contemporanea
Email are the bricks of modern society

L’arte della vita è essere presente
The art of living is being present

The laptop bag is the modern equivalent of the attaché case

Nothing world changing here, but I’m modestly proud of them.

P.S. I hope the Italian is correct,  since I didn’t ask anybody to verify them.

Lately I am developing a slight aversion towards so called sustainable biologic eco-friendly eco products which are hitting the stores. Don’t get me wrong I am also pondering my mind why the garlic in my (Dutch) supermarket is from China (!). And I agree we have completely lost any sensibility with nature and its processes.

Sorry, this post is in Dutch only.

Well I guess sometimes it is okay to NOT trust on intelligence… Even if this effectively requires some intelligence to agree with. The article which I found on Communications Breakdown a noteworthy blog by Tim Poulus on the Telecommunications industry. Mr. Poulus placed the article on his favourite list, I full agree on this. The article written by David Isenberg in 1997 (!) offers a profound opinion on the level of intelligence required/desired in networks exploited by telecommunication companies. Perhaps 11 years later some people start understanding where the man was talking about.

My desktop.

I confess: I’ve created my Twitter account. After having read an article by Clive Thomson (WIRED 15/07) , I changed my opinion. According to Thomson Twitter and alike enable people (friends) to gain insight in theirs friends life. Since some of us (including me) tend to believe we are in a world full of urban-normads living a high paced life, with multiple homes, friends around the globe, and outstanding language skills it can be difficult to actually talk and drink a coffee with our friends. Hence: twitter. Lets say I would be studying for one exam, I share it on my Twitter and people pick it up. So now my friends all around the world know what to ask next time they see me — or do I have to write when I talk with them on instant messaging…
